¡Bienvenidos a México!
Overview:
Mexico, or the United Mexican States, is a country with a diverse history and a rich culture. It is a federal constitutional republic that is currently divided into 31 different states and a Federal District. While Mexico City (D.F.) is Mexico’s capital and is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, there are many other important cities that are also quite highly populated, including Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, León, Acapulco, Cancún, Veracruz, Tijuana, and the city of Juarez. Due to the immense size of Mexico, which is over 760,000 square miles, the country is divided into various different geographical regions. With an estimated population of more than 113 million people, 60% of that population are categorized as “mestizos” or people of mixed descent, 30% are American Indians, and 10% are Europeans or of a different background. While Spanish is the main language, there are also various languages spoken by the indigenous people of a specific region as well. The official currency of Mexico is the peso, and Mexico’s economy is mainly supported by tourism, gasoline, and the production of agriculture and vehicles.

About the Author
My name is Abby van Vianen and I am a freshman at Barrett, the Honors College at ASU. I am currently studying elementary education with a diversity in language learning. I work at the Ahwatukee Children's Theater and I also sing with the ASU Pitchforks, ASU's only all-female a cappella group. I'm originally from Phoenix, Arizona.
I have decided to learn more about Mexico in particular because I am planning to work with students who speak spanish as their first language after I graduate from ASU. I wanted to understand more about the culture especially because I felt like it could be extremely relevant to what I've chosen to pursue as a career. I hope that one day my research will help me to better understand and relate to my students.
